A 51-year-old social worker working in Joplin, Missouri has been denied workers’ compensation. The man was injured during the devastating tornado that swept through the Joplin area.
He took it upon himself to try to save three mentally handicapped men but it came with a cost. The social worker broke each rib in his body, lost nearly all of his teeth, ruined his shoulder and spent two months in a coma. He did not possess medical insurance at the time of the accident and now has over $2.5 million in medical expenses due to his severe injuries.
Workers’ compensation was denied to him. This decision has caused an outrage, with family claiming that if the social worker hadn’t been working at the time the tornado struck then he wouldn’t have been so severely injured.
