Misclassified workers becoming a nationwide issue

Posted on Tuesday, December 8th, 2009 at 4:19 pm

State officials believe some companies classify their workers as independent contractors to save up to 30 percent on labor costs.
Company expenses such as workers compensation, Social Security taxes and unemployment insurance aren’t necessary for independent contractors.

This is giving these contractors an unfair advantage because they work for less money.
Preparation is occurring in Nebraska state legislation to crack down on those who “misclassify” their workers.

This is becoming a nation-wide issue.

New York, Montana and New Jersey said they plan to sue FedEx Ground, claiming that the company’s use of independent contractors to ship packages is illegal. Using these independent contractors, denies workers of their rights and benefits.
