Workplace Suicides

Not all work-related deaths are directly caused by accidents in the workplace. For example, a cumulative injury – caused by repetitive motions or repeated exposure to dangerous chemicals – can take months or even years to become symptomatic. An especially tragic example of a work-related fatality that is not caused by a workplace accident is suicide related to stress, anxiety, or even harassment.

The dependent relatives of a worker who has committed suicide can sometimes be eligible for workers’ compensation death benefits, if they have evidence that work stress contributed to their loved one’s death. Unfortunately, successfully filing such a claim is difficult and not always successful. Responding to Warning Signs

When a person is seriously depressed and considering self-harm, there are not always clear warning signs that friends or co-workers can notice. In some cases, however, there are certain “red flags” preceding a suicide attempt or other self-destructive behavior. Some personal changes that may be warning signs of serious depression include:

  • Social isolation
  • Expressions of hopelessness or feelings of worthlessness
  • Sudden changes in appearance (poor hygiene, etc)
  • A sudden drop in workplace productivity or participation
  • Drug or alcohol abuse

If you have noticed warning signs like these in a co-worker, you may want to speak with him or her, depending on your relationship. If you are not comfortable discussing the matter with your co-worker directly, it may be better to ask a manager or Human Resources representative to speak to him or her. Many workplaces offer some form of counseling, or carry insurance that will cover the cost of psychological treatment.

Unfortunately, businesses do not always offer the resources their employees need to stay healthy both physically and mentally. If you have any questions about your rights as a worker, or the relative of an injured worker, our New Jersey workplace injury attorneys can help.
