Whiplash Symptoms
Whiplash is a type of injury that affects the cervical (neck) region of the spine. It is most frequently caused by motor vehicle accidents, but it can occur whenever a person’s head is suddenly and violently moved back and forth. People can also experience whiplash after long falls, being struck by moving objects, or following a physical assault.
If you have been diagnosed with whiplash caused by a workplace accident, workers’ compensation can help you cover your medical bills and lost wages. If you have any questions about your legal rights as an injured employee, call the New Jersey workers’ compensation attorneys of Levinson Axelrod, P.A. at 800-346-5529.
Living with Whiplash
The symptoms of whiplash are sometimes felt immediately after an accident, but they may not develop for several hours or a day later. They vary somewhat from case to case, and can include:
- Pain and stiffness in the neck, back, and/or shoulders
- Headaches or dizziness
- Difficulty moving head or arms, or bending the back
- Impaired functioning in one or both arms
The primary treatment for whiplash is rest. During this period, patients may need back braces, cervical collars, and/or physical therapy to facilitate their recovery. Sometimes patients take prescription or over-the-counter drugs to manage persistent pain. The symptoms of whiplash usually go away within days or weeks, but in rare cases, they can become chronic problems.
Employees who qualify for workers’ compensation can receive benefits to cover their missed days of work (if more than seven business days are missed) and any medical treatment they need. Our New Jersey workers’ compensation lawyers work closely with injured employees to determine the full benefits to which they are entitled.
