Violence in the Workplace
Most workplace injuries concern simple lapses of judgment, momentary errors, or dangerous circumstances that are difficult to predict. Unfortunately, some involve more sinister factors. Violence in the workplace continues to be a major problem across the US, despite efforts by government groups and private contractors to stop this dangerous phenomenon.
According to the Occupational Safety and Health Administration, about two million American employees suffer from workplace violence every year. This violence can include threats, verbal abuse, physical assault, and even murder. In fact, homicide is the second leading cause of death in the workplace, surpassed only by motor vehicle accidents.
Protecting Yourself from Workplace Violence
Workplace violence can be very hard to predict; its victims cannot be blamed for a failure to protect themselves. However, there are certain steps you can take to help reduce your chances of being attacked at work. According to OSHA, important safety tips include:
- Immediately tell your supervisor and your business’s security staff about any threats you receive or overhear, unknown people you see around the building, or other potential dangers.
- Look for courses in your community that offer training in self defense, recognizing dangerous situations, and trying to diffuse potential violence.
- Be aware of potential dangers around your workplace, such as poorly lit areas or inadequately secured doors and windows. If you need to visit a new location or walk a long distance after dark, be accompanied by co-workers or security if possible.
If you suffer an attack while performing your work duties, you may be eligible for workers’ compensation benefits. If you have any questions about your rights or legal options, our New Jersey work injury lawyers are here to help.
