Recognizing Carpal Tunnel Syndrome
Millions of American workers have been affected by carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS). Even though it is a common condition, information about its causes and effects is not as widespread as it should be. If your job includes repetitive motions such as typing, lifting, or operating factory machinery, it is important to know the causes and early warning signs of this painful condition.
Carpal tunnel syndrome is named for a narrow space in the wrist between the bone and a protective fibrous band. This space, which is called the carpal tunnel, encases and protects the median nerve, which relays information between the brain and the thumb and fingers. Repetitive motion can cause swelling or other abnormalities in the carpal tunnel, resulting in pressure on the median nerve.
The Symptoms of CTS
The symptoms of this carpal tunnel syndrome can vary from patient to patient, depending on the exact cause of the syndrome and the extent of damage done. The earliest symptom is usually a mild tingling feeling in the hand, which may resolve on its own with rest. If the condition is not treated, however, it can progress and cause problems such as:
- Sleep disturbance caused by “pins and needles” sensation in the hand
- Pain in the wrist joint, especially when it is moved
- Loss of muscle coordination in the hand and fingers
- Pain that begins in the hand or wrist and moves up the forearm
- Muscle weakness and decreased ability to use the hand and fingers
If you have been experiencing symptoms like these, it is time to speak with a physician before the problem progresses. The treatment for CTS can range from rest and improved posture to surgical procedures. The sooner you are treated, the less invasive the treatment will likely be.
