Open vs. Closed Head Injuries

A head injury is one of the most common types of injury for adults. Head trauma is very serious as it can leave a person with permanent brain damage. There are two main types of head injuries: open head wounds and closed head trauma. Either of these can affect brain function and leave you with serious impairments.

Head trauma can occur in a variety of work-related accidents ranging from car wrecks to elevated falls. If you have suffered a head injury while on the job, you may be entitled to workers’ compensation benefits. To discuss your case, contact a knowledgeable New Jersey workers’ comp attorney from Levinson Axelrod, P.A., today at 800-346-5529.

What are Open Head Wounds?

The skull forms a tough, protective shell around the brain. However, sometimes sharp or heavy objects can penetrate the skull. This is called an open head wound. With these injuries, the objects responsible for the damage can actually tear into brain tissue. Accidents that cause open head wounds include accidents with heavy machinery, explosions, and more.

Closed Head Trauma

Closed head trauma differs from penetrating head wounds in that the brain is not directly touched by the object that causes the damage. Instead, violent head motions, such as falling and hitting one’s head, can jolt the brain inside the skull. As the brain slides in the skull, it can tear tissue as well as bruise as it hits the skull wall. This can lead to deadly swelling and bleeding inside the brain.
